Unique Gifts from Winnetka

Shops-_Elm1

Nestled along Lake Michigan’s North Shore, Winnetka is a community of tree-lined streets, sandy beaches, renowned schools, outstanding parks, quality recreation facilities, and plentiful non-profit and religious organizations. Founded in 1869, the name given to the community was a Native American word meaning “beautiful land.” Natural beauty brought early settlers, but through careful planning, Winnetka has maintained a historic, small town charm, as well as family-oriented neighborhoods, while developing into a thriving village for people to live, work, and visit.

There are some things that you just have to buy at big box stores – computers and related accessories, certain clothing lines, brand name toys and gear, maybe furniture.   But if looking for a gift or a special item, something that no one else has, come to Winnetka and spend time visiting a few of our shops.

Shopping in small neighborhoods is fun and a great way to discover hidden treasures not available at large malls.

Small store owners choose their own items, often working with local artisans and craftsmen.  A faux Cartier necklace or a mirror made out of a bicycle spoke cannot be found at just any old place.   Neither can an old railroad-pulley-thing that is now a lovely seafoam green painted coffee table.

Here are few local favorites.

Artistica Italian Gallery

990 Green Bay Road, 847-446-2916.  Nowhere will you find more beautiful hand-made Italian pottery.

The name Artistica is not just the name of their business, but also a brand that they have cultivated for many years.  Their beautiful pottery and majolica is now highly regarded and stamped or handpainted with the name; thus you are likely to hear people asking for “Artistica” pottery

Seagrass

895 Green Bay Road, 847-446-8444.  This store’s tagline is:  “A Bit of the East Coast on the North Shore.”  Maria Smith, the owner, sells vintage items, art and jewelry made by local artisans, furniture, and lots of interesting home decor things.  That’s where I saw the pulley-thing (don’t know what else to call it) that is now a coffee table.

Since opening their doors in the heart of Winnetka, Illinois in 2004, Seagrass has offered a unique blend of home furnishings, accessories, one-of-a-kind vintage finds and art and photography inspired by coastal themes
