Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. The holiday originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the war. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service.

The holiday typically marks the start of the summer vacation season. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.

Watch high school marching bands, drum and bugle corps, veterans groups, members of the military and others proceed south along State Street, from the stepping-off point at Lake Street to Van Buren Street.

Northbrook Memorial Day Parade May 25, 2015  On May 25th the Northbrook Memorial Day Parade will begin at 10:30AM from the corner of Cherry & Western, east to Church and Shermer and continues on Shermer west to Meadow. FREE Popsicles after the ceremony at the American Legion Post 791 on Shermer (while supplies last). FREE. Type: Festival/Special Events.

Memorial Day Parade – Monday, May 25th

The Village of Wilmette and Huerter Post #46 of the American Legion will host a Memorial Day parade on Monday, May 25th.  The parade will begin at 10:30 am at Lake Avenue and Ridge Road and proceed east on Lake to Park, south on Park to Wilmette, east on Wilmette and conclude at Village Hall, 1200 Wilmette Avenue.

Parade units will include Veterans, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, the Wilmette Police and Fire Departments, and more. Once at the Village Hall, a brief ceremony will be held near the Wilmette war memorial.
